February 16, 2023 post.
We have received some inquiries and concern over the potential impact the train derailment in East Palestine could have on the streams, aquifers and drinking water in Crawford County. To hopefully ease some worries, please know that Crawford County is a county consisting of nothing but headwaters. What does that mean? We are the starting points for the different watersheds in our county and all of our water/runoff drains away from Crawford County. This graphic is the map from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources showing the streams and drainage areas across the state. A cool feature - the dark red line that goes across the state is "The Divide" -- meaning watersheds above that line flow north towards Lake Erie and the watersheds below the red line head south towards the Ohio River.
